Beer and Microbreweries
Tampa Bay is quickly becoming a hotbed of craft beer-ology. With a bevy of original brews uniquely formulated to Florida’s sunny climate, and more than enough places to go bottoms-up, Tampa Bay is the perfect destination for any beer-cation.
Recently rated one of “America’s Top Ten Emerging Beer Towns” by The Pour Fool, Tampa prides itself in celebrating the rich history of craft beer locally echoing a state of mind rooted in history.
About Cigar City Brewing
“In a state known for theme parks, Cigar City Brewing has become a major attraction for those who appreciate and seek out excellent beer. It opened with a flourish and spread its reach quickly, appealing to both hardened beer geeks and brew novices with eyebrow-raising flavors and commitment to quality. Capitalizing on the Latin culture and tobacco-manufacturing history of Tampa Bay, Cigar City highlights those strengths on its labels and in its beer names and recipes. Many of the beers it produces – Jai Alai IPA, Improv Oatmeal Rye India-Style Brown Ale, Cubano-Style Espresso Brown Ale – reflect the sensibilities and ingredients of Florida. One of Cigar City Brewing’s most sought after beers is a special release called Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout. The 11 percent ale is aged on cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla beans, ancho chiles, pasilla chiles, and cinnamon.”
– John Holl, The American Craft Beer Cookbook
At Cigar City Brewing we make beer we like to drink and toast those who choose to drink with us. Behind all our beer is the philosophy that quality is achieved by giving first rate ingredients to first rate people in a space where they are free to pursue their passion. We acknowledge that what we do at Cigar City Brewing isn’t for everyone, but we welcome all.
Cigar City Brewing, rated a “top brewery in the nation” by The Daily Meal and the “number one brewer in Florida” by RateBeer, prides itself on celebrating the rich history of the community and brewing craft beer that echoes a state of mind all Tampa’s own. Try the Cubano-Style Espresso Brown Ale made with Cuban-style roasted espresso beans, sweet caramel and toffee – a nod to Cuban Coffee, a popular drink in historic Ybor City for decades. The Cigar City tasting room is a must-visit attraction in Tampa – try the world-famous Jai Alai, Café Con Leche Sweet Stout, Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale or even the Invasion Pale Ale. Some Cigar City beers can’t be tasted or tried anywhere else!
Then head down to Ybor to visit the first licensed brew-pub in Florida, Tampa Bay Brewing Company, a unique micro-brewery with a line of 8 core and 38 seasonal proprietary beers and 12 hand-crafted tap beers. The entrees go well beyond your typical pub fare featuring a special not-so-secret ingredient: craft beer! Be sure to try the Old Elephant Foot India Pale Ale or the award-winning Cider Wings made with Red Eye Ale.
Next stop is America’s oldest beer-brewer, which has a home right here in Tampa Bay. The Yeungling Brewery, complete with a “biergarten” where you can sample Yeungling’s rich heritage, offers free tours of the facility Monday-Friday.
Another local staple was founded by Tampa Bay natives specifically to create craft beer that reflects the Florida way of life. Florida Avenue Brewing Co., one of the area’s hidden brewing gems, has a tasting room open five days a week and offers brewery tours. Its claim to fame is the light Florida Avenue Ale, perfectly enjoyed on a warm sunny day.
The newest addition to the Tampa craft beer scene is newcomers, Coppertail Brewing Company. A Florida inspired, Tampa brewery centrally located at the crossroads of Ybor City and Downtown Tampa. Try the Night Swim, a rich and toasty porter with a hint of chocolate or the Free Dive, a Gulf Coast IPA with huge hits of citrus and pine aromas layered over a bright malt backbone. The official tasting room will open in November, but by the end of August hop heads can enjoy a temporary tasting room at the craft brewery.
